Weeks after Academies Act passed, 142 schools to convert to academy status - (DfE - 1 September)

Academies are publicly funded independent schools, free from local authority and national government control. Other freedoms include setting their own pay and conditions for staff, freedoms concerning the delivery of the curriculum, and the ability to change the length of their terms and school days. Schools can register their interest in becoming an academy by completing and submitting an online registration form.

Academies can benefit from greater freedoms to help schools innovate and raise standards. These freedoms include

  • freedom from local authority control
  • ability to set your own pay and conditions for staff
  • freedom from following the National Curriculum
  • ability to change the lengths of terms and school days.

The DfE are also making plans for further freedoms for academies in the way they engage in local partnerships and deliver 14-19 education.
