There are numerous and varied reasons why a child or young person might have special educational needs. These range from behavioural problems, learning difficulties, through medical, physical and neurological conditions to the loss of hearing, sight or speech.

The following sections highlight some of the main causes of learning disability and identifies many of the registered charities working in these areas.
